Genesis 29-50: The Coming of Shiloh


INTRODUCTION.

A.        In our last lesson, we looked at the promise of hope to come through God’s promises Abraham. Let us take the time to recall a few of God’s promises to Abraham. (Genesis 12:1-3,7)

1.         The Lord would make Abraham a great nation.

2.         The Lord would bless Abraham and make his name great.

3.         The Lord would bless those who blessed Abraham and would curse those who cursed Abraham.

4.         In Abraham, the Lord would bless all the families of the earth.

5.         The Lord promised to give Abraham the land of Canaan.

B.        In this lesson, we will take a brief look at Isaac and Jacob. We will also consider the promises passed down to Isaac, Jacob, and Judah.

I.         BRIEF OVERVIEW OF ISAAC AND JACOB.

            A.        Coverage of Genesis 25:19-26:35.

                        1.         Rebekah gave birth to Jacob and Esau.

                        2.         Esau sold his birthright to Jacob.

                        3.         Isaac traveled to Gerar.

                        4.         Isaac prospers and moves to the valley of Gerar.

                        5.         The Lord appears to Isaac.

                        6.         Isaac makes a covenant with Abimelech.

                        7.         Esau took wives from the Hittites.

            B.        Coverage of Genesis 27:1-28:22.

                        1.         Rebekah and Jacob deceived Isaac.

                        2.         Isaac gave Jacob the blessing.

                        3.         Esau planed to kill Jacob.

                        4.         Isaac and Rebekah sent Jacob to Padan Aram to find a wife.

                        5.         The Lord spoke to Jacob in a dream.

            C.        Coverage of Genesis 29:1-31:55.

                        1.         Jacob met Rachel.

                        2.         Jacob agreed to serve Laban for seven years for Rachel's hand in marriage.

                        3.         Jacob is tricked into marrying Leah.

                        4.         Jacob marries Rachel a week after marrying Leah. Jacob agreed to serve seven more years.

                        5.         Leah, Zilpah, Rachel, and Bilhah bore Jacob 12 (?) children.

                        6.         Jacob and all his departs from Laban.

            D.        Coverage of Genesis 32:1-35:29

                        1.         Jacob saw the angels of the Lord in a dream.

                        2.         Jacob made preparations to meet Esau.

                        3.         Jacob wrestled with an angel of the Lord. (?)

                        4.         Jacob met Esau and made peace.

                        5.         Jacob and his family settled in Shechem.

                        6.         Dinah is defiled and her brothers took revenge.

                        7.         Jacob went to Bethel and worshipped God.

                        8.         Isaac and Rebekah died.

            E.        Coverage of Genesis 36:1 - 50:26.

                        1.         The genealogy of Esau is given.

                        2.         Joseph was sold into Slavery.

                        3.         Joseph and his family was united in Egypt.

                        4.         Jacob told his sons what their lineage would bring.

                        5.         Jacob gave Judah a special message.

                        6.         Jacob died and was buried in Caanan.

                        7.         Joseph died.

II.       PROMISES PASSED DOWN.

            A.        Promises to Isaac. (Genesis 26:2-5, 23-25)

                        1.         The Lord promised to give land to Isaac and his descendants.

                        2.         The Lord would perform the oath He had sworn to Abraham.

                        3.         The Lord promised to multiply Isaac’s seed.

                        4.         The Lord promised Isaac that in him all nations of the earth would be blessed.

            B.        Promises to Jacob. (Genesis 28:13-15)

                        1.         The Lord promised to give the land to Jacob and his descendants.

                        2.         The Lord promised to multiply Jacob’s seed.

                        3.         The Lord promised Jacob that in him all the families of the earth would be blessed.

                        4.         The Lord promised to stay with Jacob and to bring him back to the land of promise.

            C.        Promises to Judah. (Genesis 49:8-12)

                        1.         Judah’s brothers would praise him.

                        2.         Judah’s hands would be on the neck of his enemies.

                        3.         Judah’s brothers would bow down to him.

                        4.         Judah was called a lion’s whelp (strength and royalty).

                        5.         The scepter would not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet until Shiloh comes.

CONCLUSION.

A.        God’s promises to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Judah are crucial. To each of them, God have a brief look to man’s future hope.

B.        Because God fulfilled his promises to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Judah, everyone who turns to Jesus Christ (Shiloh) will be saved.
