The Life of a Mother

INTRODUCTION.

A.        Without using any statistical information, I would speculate that one of the most underappreciated jobs is that of being a mother.

B.        Although our culture has set aside this day as a “Mother’s Day,” I would like to remind everyone present, that, no matter what day it may be on the calendar, every day is a day to show your mother honor and respect.

C.        Since our minds are on this special day (as established by our culture), I would like to take the opportunity to bring to your remembrance the life of a mother.

I.         THE LIFE OF A MOTHER.

            A.        A mother bears children. (Genesis 3:16)

            B.        A mother gives the law to her children.

                        1.         Proverbs 1:8

                        2.         Proverbs 6:20

                        3.         Consider King Lemuel’s mother. (Proverbs 31:1)

            C.        A mother can experience joy. (Proverbs 23:19-25)

            D.        A mother can experience sorrow.

                        1.         Sorrow can be brought on by a foolish child. (Proverbs 10:1)

                        2.         Sorrow can be brought on by a grown child. (Proverbs 15:20

                        3.         Sorrow can be brought on by a child who lacks correction. (Proverbs 29:15)

            E.        A mother guides (manages) the home. (1 Timothy 5:14)

                        1.         Mothers are to keep the home. (Titus 2:4-5)

                        2.         Consider the mother who “watches over the ways of her household.” (Proverbs 31:27-28)

                        3.         Consider the “virtuous woman” who is an example of a “domestic manager.” (Proverbs 31:15-25)

            F.        A mother is to be honored.

                        1.         This respect was taught within the Old Testament. (Exodus 20:12; Leviticus 19:3; Proverbs 31:28)

                        2.         This respect is taught within the New Testament. (Ephesians 6:2-3; 1 Peter 3:7)

                        3.         Children must be taught not to be disrespectful towards their mothers. (Proverbs 19:26; 20:20)

CONCLUSION.

A.        As you leave here today, please keep in mind the grave responsibility which your mother has embraced. Be thankful for what she does in her role as a mother. Show your appreciation to your mother.

B.        For the mothers among us, remember your God given roles. View your responsibilities, not as chores, but as privileges granted to you by God. Not everyone is suited to the role of being a mother.
