Facts You Learn from Bible Study
INTRODUCTION.
A. The nation of Israel suffered at the hands of the Almighty God when they chose to depart from His word. (Hosea 4:1-6)
1. What led Israel down this path of destruction?
2. Consider verse 6: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.” (NKJV)
3. Israel’s lack of knowledge was by choice. As a result, their lack of knowledge directly led to their disobeying God.
B. While Israel and Judah were God’s physical nation before the death of Jesus Christ, today, Christians make up the spiritual nation or kingdom of Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 2:9-10)
C. Is it possible for Christians to likewise be destroyed because a lack of knowledge?
1. Like Israel, if we willfully lack knowledge of God’s word, then we, too, will be led to sin.
2. If we are walk the same sinful path, then we shall likewise suffer the consequences. (Matthew 7:21; Romans 6:23)
D. With this lesson, I would like to show you just a handful of facts from the Bible which you will learn if you study God’s word. Without these facts, you will not be able to faithfully serve the Lord, overcoming sin.
I. FACTS YOU LEARN FROM BIBLE STUDY.
A. You learn about the New Covenant. This New Covenant is the very foundation of one’s faith and obedience in Jesus Christ.
1. Jeremiah 31:31-34
2. Hebrews 8:6-13; 9:11-17
B. You learn how to use and apply the word of Truth.
1. 2 Timothy 2:14-16
a. Rightly dividing - orthotomeo - lit., “to cut straight” (orthos, “straight,” temno, “to cut”), is found in 2 Tim. 2:15, kjv, “rightly dividing,” rv, “handling aright” (the word of truth); the meaning passed from the idea of cutting or “dividing,” to the more general sense of “rightly dealing with a thing.” What is intended here is not “dividing” Scripture from Scripture, but teaching Scripture accurately. b. The more you study the Bible, the more you are able to understand it’s many wonderful secrets and teach to other people.
2. Hebrews 5:12-14
a. senses - aistheterion - faculty of the mind for perceiving, understanding, judging (Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon)
b. senses exercised - diakrisis - “a distinguishing,” and so “a decision” . . . (Vine’s)
c. The more you study the Bible, the more you will be able to distinguish (discern) what is right and what is wrong.
C. You learn what is morally right and what is wrong. For example:
1. Ephesians 4:25-32
2. Colossians 3:5-11
3. Galatians 5:19-26
D. You learn about the workings of the local church. (1 Timothy 3:14-16) For example:
1. The role of men and women within the church. (1 Timothy 2:1-15)
2. The qualifications of elders and deacons. (1 Timothy 3:1-13)
3. The role of the evangelist to instruct the brethren in the word of God. (1 Timothy 4:6,12-13)
4. The requirements in providing for widows of the church. (1 Timothy 5:1-16)
5. The proper treatment of and respect for the elders who rule over the church. (1 Timothy 5:17-20)
E. You learn about the need for faithful obedience.
1. Hebrews 11:1-6 - without faith, you cannot please God.
2. James 2:14-26 - faith without works is dead.
3. Matthew 7:21-27
CONCLUSION.
A. Bible study is like opening a wrapped gift. Every time you open it, you always find something wonderful, meaningful, and important to your life as a Christian.
B. If you are a Christian, then make Bible study a regular activity in your home life.
C. If you are not a Christian, then follow the Bible’s guide to salvation.
1. Believe in Jesus Christ. (John 3:16; 8:24; Mark 16:16)
2. Repent of your sins. (Luke 13:3; Acts 2:38)
3. Confess your belief in Jesus. (Romans 10:9-10)
4. Be baptized into Jesus Christ. (Mark 16:15-16; Acts 2:38; Galatians 3:27; 1 Peter 3:21)
